Short and Sassy for Summer: What’s Trending Now in Shorter Hairstyles

When it comes to hair, a new season always brings about new haircut trends. Some are refurbished from past years while others are completely fresh and new.

And, in the thick of summer, many women are searching for a refreshed look. Read on for three haircuts that are currently on trend.

The blunt bob

Love them or hate them, the Kardashians are a style staple when it comes to beauty. And recently, both Kim Kardashian West and Khloe Kardashian debuted a blunt bob, which is sure to send women rushing to their hairdresser’s chair.

Sleek and simple, this cut is focused on keeping the hair one length, i.e., blunt at the ends. This is done by cutting the hair across straight. It can be shoulder length or even shorter, just below the ears and looks stylish parted down the middle or with a side part. This cut is sleek and easy to maintain.

The razor cut

This cut is the somewhat opposite of a blunt cut. The idea is to remove any heaviness or thickness in the hair through razor-cutting at the ends and even layers, if desired. This cut works well with straight or wavy hair and can be adjusted in length from just above the shoulders to just below the ears.

The pixie

Though haircut trends come and go, the pixie stands the test of time. Originally, short haircuts were made popular during the roaring 20s. But the pixie itself was made famous by Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. A decade later, stars like Goldie Hawn and Mia Farrow sported the ‘do.

The pixie is a cropped cut that can be a half of an inch to three inches long. This cut is simple to maintain and can be customized to flatter your face shape.

The wavy bob

The wavy bob is a twist on the traditional bob because it offers more movement and texture through the cutting of layers. This style can be worn just above the shoulders or even shorter, and with or without bangs.

Wedding Season is Around the Corner…Make Sure Your Hair is Center Stage!

Whether you’re a bride-to-be, mother of the bride or wedding guest, one thing is certain: you want to look your best on the big day. In addition to your dress, your hair should be absolutely perfect and gorgeous. The style you choose should offer you confidence and make you feel beautiful.

Beth Barton can help. Read on for some tips on what to think about when considering your best wedding hairstyle.

Start early

It’s key to start thinking about your hairstyle early. Additionally, it’s important to get your hair in tiptop shape well before the wedding. This means scheduling regular trims and conditioning treatments months in advance. Trims will keep your hair free from split ends while conditioning treatments like keratin treatments will enhance your hair’s health and vibrancy from the inside out.

Beth Barton offers a variety of keratin treatments in metro Detroit at her salon. As a protein naturally found in your hair, keratin is essential to lustrous, healthy hair. When hair becomes damaged or is not well-maintained, keratin can be lost. However, with high-quality, professional treatments, it can be replaced. Beth can customize your keratin hair treatment based on your hair’s needs.

Additionally, you should take care to get on an appointment schedule in advance to achieve your best hair color by the time of the event. This may involve several appointments and, most definitely, a touch up just prior to the wedding.

Beth welcomes a consultation, which will determine which treatments are right for you.

Get inspired

Once you are on track with achieving brilliantly colored, healthy hair, you should start gleaning inspiration for your wedding day hairstyle. Between the internet, magazines and Pinterest, there’s no shortage of places to look for hairstyle inspo.

It is key to consider your hair length and texture, though, when combing through styles. It is also essential to have a hair trial appointment to ensure you and your hairdresser are on the same page well in advance of the big day.

If your hair is short, you may consider a simple style consisting of soft waves or even a headband or hair piece to accent the hair. Depending on the length, you could even do a half-up ‘do. If your hair is medium-length or long, you will need to decide whether you want all of the hair up, all of it down or somewhere in between. From a top bun to a low bun, to a side swept look to tighter curls and more, the options are a plenty and Beth can create a completely unique hairstyle for you. In fact, event updos are one of her specialties!

One of the best hairdressers in metro Detroit

With a long list of clientele and an elite education, Beth Barton is known as one of the most sought-after hairdressers in metro Detroit. Her clients come to her from near and far because they know that, with her, they are in truly capable and creative hands.

What to Look for in a Hairdresser

When it comes to what people notice about you upon meeting, hair is most likely at the top of the list. After all, your hair color, length, condition and style can say a lot about you and your personality.

Perhaps you’re not quite satisfied with your hair or you’re new to the area and searching for a hairdresser. Here are some tips on what to look for in a hairdresser to help ensure you’ll be satisfied with your results and experience.

What’s key in a hairdresser?

While many factors play a role in finding a fantastic hairdresser, the first step is research. Your hairdresser should have a reputable website that details the services they provide. This way, you can get a feel of his or her experience level and offerings.

Next, you should schedule a consultation with hairdressers you are considering. When calling, note the level of service you receive when you call the salon. All salon staff members are key to your overall experience.

Once at your consultation, you should be sure you feel comfortable and well taken care of by each staff member you encounter. When you meet with the stylist, he or she should be welcoming and a good listener, taking in your thoughts on which treatments you would like. Then, he or she should be able to make recommendations based on the look you are trying to achieve.

You should ask for photos of hair they have worked on. This is how you can get a feel for the hairdresser’s style and abilities. Your hairdresser should also be able to tell you about his or her training and education. Though a cosmetology license is vital, additional training is also key because it demonstrates level of commitment and continuing education.

Your hairdresser should also offer high-quality hair products and be able to share with you specific products that will be best for your hair. And, overall, your hairdresser should be kind, reliable and deliver on results!

Elite Detroit hairdresser

As one of the most sought-after hairstylists in metro Detroit, Beth Barton understands what it takes to create beautiful looks for her clients. Her long list of clients, continuous training by the best in the industry from New York to Miami and innate creativity and talent for hair are a few of the things that set her apart.

How to Find the Perfect Haircut for You

Summer is a great time to freshen up the look of your locks. Many opt for a shorter, wispier ‘do in the hot, humid months while others are looking to make a dramatic change to their hair.

No matter if you’re looking for a subtly different haircut or something more eye-catching, there are several points you should keep in mind to ensure you get the perfect haircut for you.

Get inspired

There’s really no shortage of places to look to get inspiration for your next haircut. From magazines to searching the internet to Pinterest, you can peruse haircut options nearly anywhere.

Once you’ve found a cut you like, you may consider saving it to your phone or printing it out to bring with you to your appointment. It’s also wise to come with several versions of the haircut at hand so you have options when it comes to your hair type and texture, as not every cut works perfectly on every type of hair.

Know what works

When it comes to haircuts, there’s really no such thing as one-size fits all. And various haircutting techniques, such as point cutting, dry cutting and razor cutting, can help make your look come alive. But it’s key to remember that every head of hair is different; so the haircut you see and love on your favorite celebrity may not look exactly the same on you.

Truth be told, even specific haircut styles, like the bob the lob or the pixie, can be customized to each person. And a great hairdresser should, indeed, take this customized approach. As a general rule, though, here are haircuts that work well with various face shapes.

Round face: Haircuts that hit below the chin work well. If your hair is wavy or curly, be careful of going too short, which can make the face look wider. Volume at the top of the head can help create the look of an elongated face.

Square face: Texture works well with strong features and a strong jawline. Styles and cuts that have curls or ends that are choppy also work well.

Heart-shaped face: Haircuts that bring attention to the cheekbones and eyes work best. Think bangs and styles with volume at the sides.

Long face: If you want to downplay your face length, so should you your hair length. The longer the hair, the longer your face will look. So shorter styles with lots of volume work well, as do bangs.

Oval face: Most haircuts work well with oval faces, though those with texture work particularly well.

The bottom line is, though, you should feel your best in your haircut…and that’s all that really matters.

Tips for Hair Maintenance in Humid Weather

With all of the fun that comes along with summer – sunshine, the beach, swimming – the truth is, hot and humid weather can wreak havoc on hair.

If you’re frustrated with unruly, frizzy hair due to humidity, don’t fret. There are ways to tame it. Keep reading to learn how.

Work with your hair

Any and all hair can feel the effects of humidity. However, certain hair types, like those with natural texture, wave or curl, can be particularly susceptible to the heat and moisture that’s in the air this time of year. In fact, even right after straightening it, these weather conditions can make your hair go back to its natural condition of curls or waves, topped off with a whole lot of frizz.

While curls and waves are beautiful when properly maintained, it’s safe to say that no one likes their hair to be frizzy. Frizzy hair looks unruly and damaged, even if it’s not. The trick is to understand your hair type and work with it, not against it.

For example, maybe you like to straighten out your waves with a flat iron. On the most humid of days, this may not be an optimal choice (as within minutes, you may experience your hair “poufing” up anyway). Consider going with your hair’s natural texture. And the key? The right products and tools.

The right stuff makes all the difference

Whether you experience a little or a lot of frizz, the trick to taking control of it is using the right products and hair tools. This starts in the shower. Using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner can hydrate your hair, preventing it from soaking in the moisture in the air.

Next, while your hair is damp, applying a lightweight oil or serum can help to repel humidity even more while also smoothing flyaways. If you have thick hair, it’s safe to apply this product from your roots to your ends. If you have limp or fine hair, apply only from the middle to the ends of the hair.

Next, consider using a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer, especially if your hair is wavy or curly. This can further control frizz and result in more shapely waves and curls. You may also consider a hair treatment, like a professional keratin treatment, to lock in smoothness and shine when you need it most.

A hairdresser with accolades

When it comes to your hair, who you choose for cut, color and styling is vital. Not all hairstylists are equal.

Beth Barton, hairstylist in metro Detroit, is an expert in all things hair. With an extensive education and elite training under some of the most well-known hairdressers in the country, Beth is proud to consistently hone her skills in hair color, haircutting and styling. She knows that remaining at the forefront of her industry is imperative to bringing her clients the best results possible.

Why a Keratin Treatment Could be Just What Your Hair Needs Right Now

With winter behind and warmer weather here (finally!), it’s time to evaluate your hair for the damage that the cold may have caused. Yes, just like hot, humid weather can cause hair woes (frizz, anyone?!), cold weather can wreak havoc of its own.

But don’t fret, because a keratin hair treatment can quickly undo the damage and leave you with lovely, lustrous locks this season. Read on to learn more.

Leftover cold-weather damage

From blustering winds to below-zero temps to snow and rain, hair can really take a beating during the winter months. Cold, dry air is likely to cause the hair’s cuticle to lift, leaving you with breakage, unruly ends and hair that can’t hold moisture.

Color can quickly look less-than-vibrant in the winter and, particularly for you gals with thick, long or curly hair, locks can get dried out in the winter to say the least. As such, it can also more easily tangle, causing even more breakage. Vicious cycle, right? But alas, there is hope!

Keratin = smooth, silky, shiny hair

You’ve probably heard of keratin treatments…they are all the rage right now in the beauty world.

Why? Because they work so incredibly well.

Keratin is a natural protein in the hair, nails and skin. And your hair is made up of primarily keratin. This protein helps the hair cuticle remain intact as well as protects the hair internally. When hair becomes dry and damaged, either through coloring, use of hair tools and even the bitter weather, keratin is lost. This results in lackluster hair. However, keratin can be replaced.

After a keratin treatment, the smoothness and elasticity return to the hair along with lustrous shine. Another benefit is that these treatments can be customized to your needs and last weeks or months.

The treatment is very relaxing and uses advanced technology to bind keratin to your hair. And you can even wash your hair the next day! The process involves applying the treatment to clean hair and then setting it. And, bonus, it will stave off frizz in the hot weather, too.

What to Consider Before a Major Hair Change

Spring is a time of refreshing and renewal with the new season. And many people get the bug to revamp their hair with the change of season, too.

However, before making that major hair change, there are some factors you should consider. Read on for more.

Job and lifestyle

First and foremost, when thinking about a major hair change, you should evaluate how it would fit into your lifestyle and/or professional life. For instance, maybe you are considering a trendy hair shade, like a balayage of rose gold, lavender or even baby blue. While these trends can look beautiful, if you work in a corporate environment, a more natural color may be a better choice. Though some companies are open to creative expression, some do have guidelines in place.

Upkeep

Another important factor when considering a major hair change is the level of upkeep. For example, you may be used to having long hair that you often pull back into a ponytail or put up in a bun. When you decide on a short haircut, this isn’t always possible. Further, many hair colors and cuts require regular touch ups to look their best, which costs both time and money.

Your reasoning

While there’s nothing wrong with wanting a brand new look, it’s important to be sure that your decision is not a rash one that you may regret afterward. For example, if you’ve just gone through a breakup, job loss or another emotional event, for example, you may wish for a major change. However, it’s important not to make a decision like cutting off all of your hair or dyeing it a completely different color when you’re in a state of mind that could be temporary. Give it a bit of time before scheduling your appointment to ensure you will truly be happy with your new hair.

Novi hair salon

How the Right Haircut and Style Can Make You Look Years Younger

When it comes to hair, the hairstyle you don can either enhance your look, offering a younger, more vibrant appearance or it can do just the opposite.

Most women would agree that they’d like to look and feel their best, and your hair is an integral part of that. Read on to get more information on the best hairstyles for you.

Why is hair so important?

Hair is one of the first physical traits that others notice about someone. As such, your hair should speak to your personality, style and also highlight your appearance. When we aren’t feeling our best or see the years creeping up, often a new hairstyle is what we yearn for. The right hair can offer just the boost in confidence we desire.

Hair can be a fantastic accessory, but it’s important to choose wisely and seek out a hairdresser who can offer the best guidance. When searching for a haircut, color and style, many women aren’t sure where to start. Here is some expert advice.

Style, color, cut 101

If you’re looking for the best hairdo that accentuates your style and facial features, along with offering a youthful appearance, there are some key points to keep in mind.

Going with the grain of your hair is vital. For example, if your hair ultra-thick and wavy, choose styles that highlight your gorgeous texture while keeping frizz at bay with the right products and keratin treatments. If your hair is on the fine side and straight, choose a cut that offers light layers and adds volume. When you go with the natural flow of your hair, you can typically achieve more natural and easily-maintained looks.

Bangs can be a unique way to frame the face and mask fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead. Further, bangs offer a more youthful look. Women over 50 may consider keeping their locks shoulder-length or shorter, as longer lengths can add age. Further, a deep side part can be more face-flattering than a middle part for older women.

Regarding color, highlights or babylights placed in just the right spot can create the illusion of a fresher, more vibrant appearance. Keeping up with color touch ups is important when telltale gray growth begins to show. And finally, maintaining soft, shiny hair through customized conditioning treatments will help any style look its very best.

Cold Weather Dos and Don’ts for Your Hair

With temperatures steadily dropping and winter on the horizon, it’s important to consider how the dry air and wintry weather affects our hair. Much like you’d tend to your dry skin, your hair needs certain care this time of year. Keep reading for expert tips from metro Detroit hair stylist Beth Barton.

Winter can wreak havoc on hair

As the weather gets colder, hair can really be susceptible to damage, more so than in the warmer months.

Chilly air robs your hair of its moisture. As such, hair is more brittle and not nearly as sleek-looking. Further, this dryness can lead to dry scalp, which poses a new set of issues. Hair can also become dull and lackluster, with more split ends.

Don’t fret, though, Beth Barton can help you maintain your gorgeous locks year-round.

Winter hair tips

One top tip for fighting winter hair woes is to get ahead of the game. Don’t wait until the damage is done, literally.

Tackle hair issues before they even come to light by using a professional-grade deep conditioner to keep locks smooth, strong and silky. Further, regular keratin treatments can give your hair that extra boost it needs in the winter. And don’t forget to keep up with hair trims, which remove dry, brittle ends for more lustrous hair. And to keep moisture in when the air is dry, try using a humidifier in your home.

Next, it’s key to keep your hair covered when out in the winter snow and wind. Wearing a hat or scarf over your head ensures that hair doesn’t blow about and get tangled, which can also cause damage. And remember not to go outside with wet hair, which can freeze and cause additional damage. To keep winter-causing frizz at bay, use a high-quality smoothing serum after drying your hair

How to Ensure Your Hair is Perfect for That Special Event

When it comes to your special event, whether you’re a guest at a wedding, have an important social function or it’s your own special day, such as prom or your wedding day, it is a good idea to leave your hair to the experts. After all, on these special occasions it is important to look and feel your very best.

If you have an event coming up for which you’d like a stylish updo or elegant hairstyle, read on for expert tips from Beth Barton, hairdresser in Michigan.

Photo inspiration

As your big day approaches, it’s wise to peruse magazines or Pinterest for hairstyles that you like. You may be considering a “totally up” updo, or something half up and half down. You may even be considering an elegant hairstyle where your hair is completely down but with beautiful waves or curls.

Regardless, you should be prepared with several versions of the look you’re going for so that your hairdresser has options to offer you.

Understand your own hair

It is also key to understand your own hair type when considering an updo. For example, there are styles that are better suited for thick or curly hair, while others work well on fine or straight hair. So be prepared to be a bit flexible with your look.

Further, it’s wise to get your hair in optimal condition well before your special day. This involves getting regular trims, pristine hair color and perhaps even a keratin hair treatment. After all, if the hair you’re starting with looks gorgeous and healthy, the finished product will look even more stunning.

Though you should come to your appointment with clean and dry hair, you may consider washing your hair 24 hours prior to your appointment, as squeaky-clean hair can be a bit more challenging to work with.

It starts with a consultation

The key to any hairstyle that you are sure to love is a consultation with Beth. She takes great pride in meeting with her clients and discussing their hairstyle goal and how she can best make it come to life.

During your consultation, she will assess your hair type, the event at hand and more. She will also do a trial run of your hairstyle and make any necessary adjustments so that you both are fully prepared for the special day.

The Latest Hair Color Trends: Ombre vs. Sombre vs. Balayage

As the season change, many times people become inspired to change their hair color. And with all the hair color technique names being thrown around today, it can be challenging to decipher which is which and what would work best on you.

Here, we distinguish between three popular hair color techniques: the Ombre, the Sombre and the Balayage.

Ombre, Sombre and Balayage, oh my!

The Ombre, the Sombre and the Balayage have been generating a lot of buzz and are three of the most requested color techniques today.

However, many people are confused as to what each is and the differences between them. And that’s completely understandable, as there are similarities (but also key differences).

It’s also important to note that it’s possible to have a combination of these techniques used during your hair coloring session.

First up, the Ombre. This high-dimensional color blocking technique offers a dramatic look. Derived from the French word that means “shaded,” the Ombre technique offers an obvious fade from darker hair on top to gradually lighter hair through the middle and then blonde or a shade of blonde at the bottom. The Ombre can be customized, too, with shades of brown, red or even bright, rainbow-like colors. Overall, it tends to grow out nicely and is definitely an eye-catching look.

Next, the Sombre. This, as you may guess, is a soft version of the Ombre (hence the name). This technique offers the same idea as an Ombre, but with a much softer flow and dimension. Roots are typically kept your natural shade while graduating to just a slightly lighter shade down to the ends of the hair.

And finally, let’s talk the Balayage. The word itself is derived from the French term which means “to paint.” This technique is done without the use of foils, but rather, sweeping the hair with color for a beachy appeal, with the lighter shade toward the ends of the hair. This technique offers a softer regrowth and blends the roots to the ends more than an Ombre or Sombre, for a more natural look. This look, however, is also low-maintenance, as it grows out beautifully.

If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, the best course of action is to discuss it with your hairdresser. It is wise to come to your appointment with some photos for inspiration, while also understanding that your final product may not look exactly like a photo you bring, but a version of it. A skilled hairdresser can make professional recommendations based on your goals.
